Early Russian Magazines - History (information from the "Small Arms Defense Journal")
During the mid to late 1950s the Soviets also produced an
aluminum 30-round magazine for the AK generally referred to as the “Aluminum
Waffle” by collectors because of its very distinctive ribbed pattern. This mag
is made entirely of aluminum, except for its spring, and carries a black enamel
finish. They will be found with multiple inspector stamps on both the spine and
lower sides. Made by Izhmash, most will show its factory mark on their spine.
They were probably discontinued in favor of the steel mag’s greater strength.
Soldiers have been known to use their mags as hammers, and even bottle openers.
